Hervey Bay Square Dance Club Inc.
Newsletter March 2009
Hello Every One
Here we are with another year ahead of us, with lots of dancing and fun, no doubt.
Let’s welcome the new committee, this will also remind you who to see about a specific job;

In the Management Committee we have:
President: Alec Webster
Vice President: Michiel Boerlage
Secretary: Wendy Susec
Assistant Secretary: Samantha Van Zonneveld
Treasurer: Joan Miller
Assistant Treasurer: Doreen Wright
Committee Members: Daphne Boyle, Norm Dowling, Alf Wassmer

We’ve just had a terrific weekend with David Smythe. The ‘Come & Try’ afternoon was enjoyed by all who attended and it may render new dancers. We will see on Wednesday night when Archie will start again at 6pm with a new learner’s class. A reminder that Angels are much needed at that time. The same still applies to Thursday afternoon, 1.30-3.30pm, even more so as Samantha will be away for 5 weeks and Daphne has graciously offered to keep this group dancing in her absence. Please organise yourselves to ensure there are Angels!

Assuming we will be having new dancers joining in, we all need to remember to make them welcome. And of course we all need to remind ourselves what it felt like to be a brand new learner in a strange place. Yes, our patience will be tested, but the beauty of Square Dancing is the camaraderie and the expectation that everyone chips in to support the learners. A big thank you to our little band of Angels, you are a great asset to our club!

Our next social caller night is May the 9th with Kay Walker. Please check our calendar of events and mark the dates on your calendar! Maryborough has Mathew Mills on the 9th of April, promises to be a good night.  We asked for theme suggestions for our caller nights, so far we’ve come up with:

All open to suggestions!

We are going to make use of the free web advertising offered by our council. Can anyone suggest some ‘Must-Have’s’ to be included? If you went looking for information, what do you want to be there? Write it down and give it to Wendy or Samantha for processing.

Did you hear about Mabel and George at the State Round up? One of the Novice callers forgot his lines and so filled it in with “Swing Your Partner”, and the dancers heard again, “Swing Your Partner”. Mabel called out to George “Go the other way!” to which George replied, “What do you mean, go the other way?” “Well”, yells Mabel “You’re unscrewing my wooden leg!”

Here’s some GREAT ADVICE:
If real dogs ran this country, and the teachers at schools were real dogs, this is the kind of stuff you would learn:
When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
When it’s in your best interest, practice obedience.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy
Let others know when they have invaded your territory
Take naps - Stretch before rising - Run, romp and play daily
Thrive on attention and let people touch you
Avoid biting when a simple growl will do
On warm days, stop to lie on your back in the grass
On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree
No matter how often you’re scolded, don’t buy into the guilt thing and pout. Run right back and make friends.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
Eat with gusto and enthusiasm. Stop when you’ve had enough.
Be loyal, never pretend to be something you’re not.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close and nuzzle them gently.
When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body (That’s why we are Square Dancers!)

A few reminders from the last meeting;
Dance fees to be paid before we begin or in the breaks, this allows the treasurer stress free dancing too.
Square Dance Society of Qld will advise us who has to pay and when, please don’t send individual moneys.
Living Expo, Sat.5th Sept., has asked if we are willing to do 2 time slots, 10.30am and one 30min.-1hr later. Think about it.
Does anyone know which bodies can be approached for different grants? Please share your knowledge with us.
Please place your own clean cup back in the plastic boxes after supper.
Remember to bring your chair back inside before you leave.
There is a roster sheet available for leaving the kitchen clean and the coffee and tea put away. Preferably people who don’t already have jobs and/or responsibilities for our club, please add your name to your preferred date. If we share the jobs around, we won’t get burn-out from the eager beavers.
If you have ideas, use the suggestion box! Have a look at our Notice Board! Did you ever see such a feat? There’s space to put up all the ideas you’re going to bring in!

Birthdays for March:
Alf - March 17th, Iris – March 24th, Wendy Purvis 29th, Joan 31st
Very best wishes to all of you and many happy returns of the day! Celebrate!
We have NO Birthdays listed for April, did we miss you?
For those of you who celebrated theirs in the ‘in-between’ months, hope you had a great day! Cheers!

We have had a good coverage from the local Newspapers. If you can think of some eye catching way to keep up our profile or if you think there are aspects of Square Dancing we need to include, get in touch with Samantha.  This also applies to our own Newsletter. If you have something you would like to share, or some regular feature you would like to see included, all contributions and ideas gratefully accepted!   With regards to our Newsletter, please let us know if an emailed version is not suitable for you.

There will be a committee meeting this Saturday, 28th of March, at 2.30pm, 11 Moorhen     Court, Eli                 Waters. If you know of anything which needs to be discussed, planned, sorted
or agreed upon, please let a committee member know. Can you all give it some thought as
to how often we might like to have a general meeting, and should they be on a
Wednesday night?

A last reminder to bring your personal data up to scratch. Still a few names in BOLD.
The list will then be printed so members can obtain a copy, for club use only.
Maybe we can email some, if you prefer?

Dates to write on your calendar:

Remember – every cloud has a silver lining!
And sunshine follows rain - without rain we would not get the diamonds
on the spiderwebs and on washing lines either.

For now, keep well, keep smiling
be kind to yourself and others
and most of all,
Keep Dancing

"Poem for Square Dancers"
Ever hear a member say, they ought
to run the group this way?
Ever wonder who is they;
who get the brunt the live long day?

They are the ones some call a clique;
They plan the work so things will tick,
Prepare the program, open the door,
They handle every needed chore,
They place the flag and meeting stuff
Keep everything right up to snuff.

They line up speakers, pictures too;
And people who will work for you!
They do the leg work; write the mail;
Attend the meetings without fail.

To ways and means they must attend;
Committee meetings without end,
An evening they could spend at home
group business they must roam.

They raise the money, bank it too;
Pay the bills when they are due,
They phone new members, shake their hand,
Make them feel at home and
They must manage all the work;
Sure will catch it if they shirk.

They donate freely, your duties end?
Or do a helping hand you lend?
As true as God can make a tree,
You ought to change the "they" to "we".
